Anyone Can Teach Art: Big Butterflies. A great substitute lesson for K-2!

Here is another single lesson from my book "The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook:  K-2 Lessons."  This lesson was designed to be taught by anyone, even if they do not have an art education background.

"Big Butterflies" includes a complete lesson written for a substitute.  It is filled with illustrations to help anyone teach art.  The objectives for this lesson include balance/symmetry, basic shape drawing, and cutting skills.

Pass this on to homeschoolers and regular education teachers looking to include some art into their curriculum.

K-2 Complete Substitute Lesson - "Candy House" available to download.

I published a book full of 12 complete lessons an art teacher can just leave on her desk with little to no prep for a sub.  It hasn't been getting much action - which I think is ridiculous!  This is the best thing ever written for an art teacher.
I know, I'm completely biased, and the years and hours I've spent putting this masterpiece together skews my thinking....but I called in for a sub about a week ago at 5:00am.  Then, I just rolled over and went back to sleep.  My sub plans were done!  When I got back to school the next day, my room was clean and I could tell my students had been busy.  My amazing book just sits at the corner of my desk always ready.  You should seriously think about getting a copy.

At any rate, it occurred to me that these lessons could also be great for homeschool parents, and classroom teachers who want to turn their craft time into art time.  I have begun putting each lesson from "The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook:  K-2 Lessons" on TeachersPayTeachers individually.

Now available for download, "Candy House."  It's a sweet little architecture lesson complete with step-by-step directions and a colorfully illustrated brainstorming page.  It can be left on a desk for sub or taught by a non art person in a non art setting, The student will learn and the results will be great.

I do have several free sub resources on this page too (so maybe that's where everyone is getting their plans!)  Either way - be prepared for your sub!
Thanks!

The Art Teacher’s Substitute Notebook: K-2 Lessons is now available for download!

This notebook provides 12 complete curriculum appropriate lessons designed to be taught by anyone without an art education background.

Each lesson:
has an introduction to the lesson basics and theme
•shows several student examples and graphics to inspire the students and teacher
•includes all the necessary worksheets and brainstorming pages
•can be taught with minimal supplies (paper, pencils, markers, scissors, glue! That's it!)

The Art Teacher’s Substitute Notebook:  K-2 Lessons includes lessons based on the themes of identity, and architecture.  The elements of line, shape, and color. The principles of balance, emphasis, and pattern, basic shape drawing, the parts of composition, AND MORE!

The lessons in The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook: K-2 Lessons would also be great for home schools and classroom teachers who need to add art to their curriculum!

Twelve complete lessons include eight ready to pass out worksheets, two ready to pass out handouts, and peace of mind!

We’ve all had terrible substitutes enter our elementary art room and destroy it.  Not following plans, using special supplies, or letting kids run wild.  Even substitute teachers with good intentions can often wreak havoc on an art room, or be scared to teach the prepared lesson. The Art Teacher’s Substitute Notebook:  K-2 Lessons, combined with The Art Teacher’s Substitute Notebook: The Basics will benefit your sub, your students, and you.

I’ve been developing this notebook for over six years.  I’ve left these lessons for subs, and even taught them myself.  They have been proven to be simple to teach and educational.  Substitutes will not be afraid to teach art anymore!

Available on TeachersPayTeachers for $26.99

Ande Cook's Limitation Worksheet with a sub lesson

Several years ago, I purchased Ande Cook's book Art Starters.  I adapted a few of the pages to create lessons for substitutes.
Here is a lesson plan for the page Limitation.  The concepts are abstract design, and critical thinking.  This is fun for any age!

Drawing Masks - Another Substitute Lesson

Here is another lesson I made inspired by a worksheet in Ande Cook's book Art Starters.

Here is the lesson and here is the page to help your students out.

Positive/Negative Space Coloring Page and Substitute Lesson Week!

It's substitute teacher week!  I just made that up, because I have a weeks worth of sub-lessons to share with you!  I am just a little protective of my students and their art class experience.  I've spent a lot of time making sure that the lessons my kids do with a sub are meaningful, educational, and of course easy for a sub to teach.  Oh yeah, and it's not like I am absent all the time... I have been teaching for 14 years, and I've had 2 maternity leaves, and I'm just a little particular about things.

I have a lesson that goes a long with a page I recently posted.   The  Element of Space coloring page by Art Sherman is just basic coloring and pattern making, but it is sometimes worth practicing.  Here is the lesson that goes along with it!  Print it out and leave it for your sub.

Are you ready for a substitute? Download an easy sub lesson and forms for your subs basic needs.

Do you have your emergency sub plans ready?  Download Line Caterpillars and add it to your sub folder.  It is super easy to teach, curriculum appropriate, and uses minimal supplies.

Line Caterpillars is one of the lessons in my new (soon to be released) book The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook:  K-2 Lessons.  The book contains 11 or 12 detailed lessons specifically for subs!

Does the lesson look a little confusing?  Don't worry!  This page explains the details.
But wait, there's more! Leaving sub notes is way more then just leaving easy to teach lessons.  Don't leave your sub confused and scared by your subject, your classroom, or your students!  Leave a copy of The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook:  The Basics.  The Basics contains 8 pages of customizable .pdfs.  Everything your sub will need to know about supplies, emergency plans, and routines is available here.

The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook: The Basics. Now available!

Two maternity leaves and years of unexpected absences was the catalyst for my latest endeavor,  The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook:  The Basics Coming back to school to learn that my students had a free day, played with clay and paint, or (eeh gads!) FINISHED their latest project happened all to often.  I was left notes that said my lessons were "too confusing" or a lovely letter explaining how the sub was just not an art person.  I came to realize that many subs came into my room thinking they would not actually have to teach all day.  Or worse, they were already intimidated by the subject matter and felt no point in trying (what kind of art teacher did they have?)

The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook:  The Basics is designed to set the stage for your sub and ease them into the routines and unique atmosphere of the art room.

This notebook is designed for all art teachers.  The pages are customizable .pdfs that you can fill-in, print and have available in your class at all times.  Please note that this download does not include any lesson plans.  Coming soon is The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook: K-2 Lessons.  It will be a great companion to The Basics.

The Basics includes an introductory letter for your sub, your schedule, information on emergencies, and much more!  Eight pages worth of important information for your sub.  Forget those other sub plan books- those were not made for art teachers!
Here is a sample page.  All these fields are customizable in Adobe Reader/Acrobat
Here is a sample letter to leave for your sub.  The art room can be a scary place to sub!

Light and Shadow: Practice Handout

Fourth and Fifth graders can have some difficulty understanding how to draw shadows and how to see things in 3D.  I like to set up still life objects and shine a harsh light to really get them to see the difference between light and dark.  This two-page handout could lend itself to some nice practice, but in my experience has proven to be confusing and not really necessary for the elementary set.  It would be a useful take-home, sketchbook page, or substitute assignment for older students.

Portrait of a Friend Handout and art class substitute lesson

Here is another Ande Cook Handout from SchoolArts.  The Portrait of a Friend handout is a good lesson for substitute teachers!  I even wrote up a lesson with super easy to follow steps.  Print them out and leave them with your sub binder.

Creative Coloring: Design Elements by Art Sherman & Element of Space coloring page

This download includes a little advertisement for Art Sherman's Creative Coloring: Design Elements book.  I have this book and have used it occasionally for sub lessons, or sketchbook fillers.  I found most of the lessons to be confusing for intermediate students to be able to work on independently (and not very creative.)
The second page includes two of his coloring pages that help students "practice" the element of space, a long with color and pattern.  It could be good practice, but I don't recommend building a lesson around these.

Construct a Diamond Polyhedron Handout - Ande Cook

The Construct a Diamond Polyhedron handout by Ande Cook came in a packet I received a million years ago when I subscribed to SchoolArts.  They are dated 1996 - but I wasn't teaching back then, so I am not sure when they originally came out.  I will be posting the rest of the packet as well!

Each handout is simple for most intermediate and secondary students to understand.  They would also be handy to leave for a sub!
