Drawing for the Elementary Art Curriculum - Pack of Super Simple Drawing Pages

Over the last few months I have been making these how to draw worksheets to pass out for specific projects.  Covid19 constraints has made it difficult in the art room to share things like drawing books, printed photographs, and folders and folders and folders full of the drawing resources I have used in the past.  Hence, "Drawing for the Elementary Art Curriculum" was born!

It began years ago with Zoo Animals, Farm Animals, and Sea Creatures.  I made some drawing pages by hand for these projects I often do with Kindergarten and First Grade.   Then, I started thinking about how I teach those kids how to draw fruits and vegetables for projects like still life drawing, and Arcimboldo faces.  For years I've stood at the board teaching how to draw cave animals, and dinosaurs.... !

I started by making a list of things that kids are either learning from me how to draw step-by-step, or using my drawing books, folders, and photographs to help with a project.  I got to work making the pages on ProCreate.

I actually haven't done a project with the Zodiac Animals.  I came up with the idea in January, but didn't finish it till April!

I teach a  Rousseau inspired jungle picture with first grade.

I used this page in third grade for a Basquiat project and I've used it in second for the silhouette landscape.

I teach an Under The Sea picture in Kindergarten.

It's been several years, but I used to teach a farm animal landscape every year and it was so cute.

I actually used this with first grade, but it would be better for second or third.

Another oldie I would teach to first grade at the end of the year after they visited the zoo on a field trip!

This one is new and for a new project.  I taught "Surreal Sandwiches" with fifth and sixth this year. Check out the link for my unlisted project video.

Early in my career I started doing an era specific art history project with each grade, so at the end of their six years in elementary school they would go through ALLL the fancy art eras.  Of course, kindergarten would start with Paleolithic Cave Paintings.

I do an op-art project and Notan project with fourth.  This page is simplified and helpful, but man - leaves are hard for kids to draw.

This is my guide when teaching some Thiebaud inspired still life.

As mentioned above, this one is perfect for still life and Arcimboldo fruit faces.

The Vegetable page is also hand with the Arcimboldo faces and still life.

Australian Animals pairs well with the Aborigine Dream Paintings!

Drawing Woodland Animals and Drawing Sleeping Woodland Animals go together for some winter scenes I've done with 2nd and 3rd.

And finally, Spring Things - this is an oldie I would use for a Spring Landscape.,

The entire bundle is on my TPT store for only $18.  I know, there are mixed feelings about buying and selling things on TPT, but I have a lot of free things on there too.  Check it out.

I have at least THREE more incomplete pages that are just waiting to be part of this bundle!  Flowers, insects, and musical instruments are in the works.  Any other you can think of?

Paint a Woodland Animal on a Slice of Wood!

Here is a video I made for my third graders.  I teach them how to paint a cute little woodland animal on a small slice of wood.

We are using these slices of wood for our annual class auction project for the school gala.  I am going to put these slices of wood at the bottom of a wooden tray and cover with resin. 🤞

I made two "How to Draw" pages of woodland animals that we are using for this lesson.

The first is "Draw Woodland Animals" like portraits.

Here are the Wood Slices I got.  I actually purchased three different packs of three different kinds, and that link takes you to the best ones. 👍

Merry Christmas Art Lesson Directions Bundle

I put together a bundle of my K-2  Catholic School Christmas Art Lessons directions.  As I mention in the description, the end products aren't very unique from one another when they are finished, but they are cute when done in the children's own hands.
It's the constant struggle of "step-by-step do this and it will look awesome" vs. "have at it kid".  The end results of these three lessons come out fantastic for my K-1s especially.  I know my second graders can do more riveting things.  Parents love them and tend to purchase lots of things on Artsonia, which makes me happy.  Plus, we do learn valuable skills along the way.  Think of it as process and skills over product.  That helps me sleep better.

Spoopy (spooky) Silhouettes - Printable Lesson, Tacer, & Clipart for Halloween

Last year I was asked to leave an art project for the 5-8th grade to do during their Halloween Party/free time afternoon.  Unlike what sometimes happens, I did not get a classroom full of kiddos in head-to-toe costume dropped off to have art class in lieu of their party...or after their party.

I did not want to leave something lame, but I didn't want to leave anything too involved since I wasn't going to be there.  Hence, Spoopy Silhouettes was born.

It's a classic Pinterest project.  All I've done is put it into one nice downloadable package for you. This is a nice one to do on Halloween when you do have to teach, but you don't dare touch those beautiful landscapes the kids have been working on for weeks, or get out the chalk pastel self-portraits.

The lesson includes:
2 page printable instructions
1 tracer
10 pages of halloween clipart - from the internet, I just curated them for this project.  I did not draw them!

You will need:
Coffee filters
Pencils
Watercolor Paints & supplies
Black Construction Paper
Crayons

We put our coffee filters on the air vents to dry quickly!

Happy Halloween!

TeachersPayTeachers paid for my Fluevogs. Now they shall pay for dance lessons....!

A few years ago, I was about as close as you can get to getting a book published by an actual publisher. *thisclose*  But, it didn't happen.  I sulked about it for awhile before I went the self-publishing route.  I went through iBooks for my hit, "Your Art Room's A Mess" and went with TeachersPayTeachers for my colossal success "The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook."

It sounds like I'm being a sarcastic jerk - but one thing is true - TeachersPayTeachers paid for my Fluevogs.  I joined in May of '13 and by May of '14, I earned enough to purchase some lovely Mini Zaza's on International Fluevog Day.
Brand new right out of the box.  I was so excited, I photographed it.
A stupid thing to spend my money on, but at the time, I looked at it as *free* money.  I hadn't actually done anything to earn it.  Not anything recently anyway.

Now, on to my second year with TPT.  I'm what they call a premium seller.  I honestly still get super excited when I get the email that something has sold!  Plus, I have every intention of adding new resources, and earning more money for "doing nothing".  This year however, that *free* money will go towards two little girls dance lessons.  Let's just say it's a lot more than a pair of Fluevogs.  Just think, every time you purchase something off of TeachersPayTeachers, you could be helping make two little girls' dreams come true, or outfitting an art teacher with a ridiculously awesome pair of shoes.

A fun elementary exit survey/assessment for the last day of art. Download from TeachersPayTeachers

I thought an end of year assessment or exit survey would be useful for my elementary kids.  I kept jotting down all these questions to ask each grade, and how I would format the survey... but in the end, I found one on TeachersPayTeachers that did the trick.
This photo is from TeachersPayTeachers - that is why it is so small! Here is a slightly larger version of one page/
It comes with six pages, designed slightly different for each class. I chose one page for second grade, and wasn't too thrilled with the questions.  Overall, the packet is great and very useful, but I wanted a little more.  Of course I didn't realize it until I went over it with the class and there was a bit of confusion... so I literally cut and taped a new combination of the worksheet into what I really wanted - and it went off without a hitch.

In each class we brainstormed every single project we did together during the year.  This was a great review of artists and things we had learned.  It was fun when someone remembered some little obscure thing that had happened.  I will definitely continue with exit surveys in the future.

List of Art Teachers on TeacherPayTeachers.

My district has allotted some funds to purchase resources on TeachersPayTeachers.  I have used the site a few times to purchase or download free things, and try to sell some of my own resources there too.  I was having a hard time finding quality resources that were specifically for the art room, or were created with visual art in mind.  I thought others might find it tough to navigate too, so I've started a list of stores I found that had art resources:

Me!  No Corner Suns
Klaire Pearson
Expressive Monkey
Share2Learn
Emily Berry
Scott Cummins - Outside the Lines
Katherine Yamashita
Masterpiece Momma
Create to Inspire
Art is Basic
Artsy Cat
Ms Artastic
Art Lesson Launchpad
Deep Space Sparkle
Art Wizard
Grass Carpet Studio
Art Studio FM
A Space to Create

I have purchased or downloaded from a few of these.  I've found many TPT resources useful as supplements to something I am already teaching.  I waste a lot of time reinventing what somebody else has already done!  I'll gladly pay them for the trouble.

There must be a TON more art teachers selling on TPT!  Let me know, and I will add you to the list.

Hot Dogs and Cool Cats! A downloadable sub lesson that worked pretty well.

I knew I was going to miss my first grade classes a few weeks back.  I needed a sub lesson that was relevant and kept my students on track with their curriculum.  We had been learning a little bit of color theory with our recent studies.  I kept that up with this Cool Cats and Hot Dogs Lesson that anyone can teach.

I found it on TeachersPayTeachers.  It is 19(!!!) pages. It is on sale for one more day.

Young artists learn color mixing and the difference between warm and cool colors. They can then make a hot dog or cool cat using warm or cool colors.

This packet contains everything you need to teach the Hot Dog and Cool Cat lesson:

Step by step lesson. (2 pages)
Pre-assessments (1 page)
Color wheels and color lessons (3 pages)
Dog and Cat drawing sheets (6 pages)
Sheet of rubrics (1 page)
Sheet of labels (1 page)
Pages for student generated criteria for the rubric (3 pages)

It has clean cut graphics and was easy to follow.  I taught the second hour of this lesson upon my return.  Although the kids seemed to be enjoying it, it struck me as busy work, and a little too in depth.  Even for first graders.  They knew their warm and cool colors by the end of the first day, and it seemed like I just kept re-hashing the same points with a lot of worksheets.  If you need a very thorough sub plan, this is it.  AND supporting the teachers on TeachersPayTeachers is always cool.

Free "Types of Paintings" handout/worksheet download.

I am slowly integrating choice based projects into my curriculum.  I am basing it off of the "centers" that I have set up in my 3-5th grade art room.  Our next exploration is painting!  We were finishing up some other projects and I needed a little something to have students thinking about different genres for their next independent project.

I came across this free download from TeachersPayTeachers.  It worked perfectly for what I wanted!  The download was three separate .jpgs, and the text and images are a little fuzzy.  But, besides that, it's a simple page to add to my fifth grader's sketchbooks.  They did need a review of the different genres, but after that, it went off without a hitch.

Check out the rest of this teacher's store here with a bunch of other free resources!

Ready to Paint! Two free worksheet downloads from the packet "Art Rules!"

Do your students know how to act in the art room? I always teach routines and expectations at the beginning of the year, but sometimes these need reinforcement.  Maybe even constant reinforcement.

"ART RULES" is a simple packet full of activities that help reinforce the art room rules and routine. Students can color, fill in answers, put things in order, answer true/false and finish drawing the pictures!

Pages include:
Ready for Art
Ready to Paint
Treat People and Supplies with Respect
Which of these things...
How would it make you feel....
It's Clean Up Time!
and
What have you learned.

Now you can download "Ready to Paint" and "Ready for Art" for free.  This packet is suitable for grades 2-8!

These pages can be passed out as an entire packet, or given out individual one reinforcement at a time!  Sample what this packet includes.  Visit the TeachersPayTeachers page to learn more.  The whole packet is only $5. Yeah!

"Your Art Room's a Mess!" Now available in .pdf

Not everyone has an iPad and is able to access my new eBook, and I don't want those people to be stuck with disorganized art rooms and rambunctious students!
I've made "Your Art Room's A Mess!" available in my TeachersPayTeachers store as a .pdf download. It's a little more expensive this way, 'cause TPT takes a big cut.  The .pdf version can be read on many devices and even printed!  All 107 pages.
