Cylinders and Raindrop sculptures with Kindergarten

Paper Quilled Hanging Sculptures is a lesson plan given to me by a colleague many years ago.  The lesson seems simple enough... and it is!  I teach this lesson every year and I always get fabulous results.

I introduce the lesson with photos of various types of sculpture.  We talk about abstract and figurative sculpture and what makes these different than a painting or drawing.  This lesson introduces a lot of great vocabulary too; height, width, depth, 3D vs. 2D, form, and cylinder.  I also like to demonstrate holding a sculpture in my hand and seeing it from all views, or walking around or under a giant sculpture.

Sometimes we hang our sculptures, other times I attach them to matte and hang them on the wall, sometimes they are meant to just sit on a shelf.  Every variation works.  I've even added puff ball spheres, and rectangular prisms at times.

This lesson works great for a substitute too!

Cartouche Worksheet - Free Download, and substitute lesson from the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

My fourth graders had just started their Ancient Egyptian Art unit when I was out of school for week.  I didn't want to leave them something completely different then what we were doing, so I searched for an easy to teach sub lesson that had something to do with Ancient Egypt.

Somewhere on Pinterest I found a cartouche worksheet from the Houston Museum of Natural Science.  I prepped the worksheet, and left some markers and strips of construction paper. Here are the plans I left for my sub:

This class was introduced to Ancient Egyptian Art last week.  Please pass out the “about yourcartouche” page to the class.  Read it out loud and have students discuss it.  Show students the photograph of the Ancient Egyptian Cartouche.
Students will practice writing their name in hieroglyphics on the back of the “About your Cartouche” worksheet.
Once they have practiced, pass out the long strips of gold construction paper.  This will be the inside of their own cartouche.  With pencils only, they should once again write their name going vertically down their golden strip.  If it is too long, that is okay.  Trace and color hieroglyphics with black marker.

Finally, with pencil, draw an oval around your cartouche.  Cut it out.  Make sure your English name is in pencil on the back!

A successful substitute lesson: On The Farm

One of my published substitute lessons, "On the Farm," was used in my class!

I left my copy of "The Art Teacher's Substitute Notebook: K-2 Lessons" and "The Basics" on my classroom desk.  I had an emergency sick day and the sub effortlessly taught my kindergartners.  I came back to find some beautiful projects!  I had the kids finish them up with me.  They did a terrific job!  Except that the sub couldn't find my 80lb white drawing paper... and chose orange.... which I think was odd.  If she had read "The Basics" a little more carefully, she would have known where the paper was.  Oh well!  They look great.

Free handout download and lesson for Insects in Line.

If you've been paying attention - I'm pretty sure this is the last of the handout, worksheet, sub lessons I recently found in my files.  The "Insects in Line" handout from Ande Cook, sort of goes hand-in-hand with the "Expressive Line" handout from yesterday.  Using a similar concept, the handout asks students design insects and really use exciting lines to add detail.  I have written up a very short sub lesson that goes with it as well.  Enjoy!  And Happy Valentine's Day!
Here is Ande Cook's book Art Starters that a lot of these worksheets from SchoolArts are from.

Free Expressive Line handout and substitute lesson

Here is another sample page from Ande Cook that was sent out with SchoolArts magazine several years ago.  The page "Expressive Line" challenges students to imagine everything a line can do.  I wrote up a brief sub lesson for this worksheet explaining everything the teacher should do to help students understand this exercise.

Free Handout and Sub Lesson Download: Ande Cook's Mapping your Neighborhood

Several years ago SchoolArts sent out packets of Ande Cook pages to subscribers.  The delightfully illustrated "Mapping your Neighborhood" was one of them.  This handout asks student to think carefully about the details in their neighborhood and try to draw a map of everything they can remember.  I wrote out a mini-lesson plan suitable to leave the handout with sub.  It is also great for early finishers and to supplement another lesson.  I have used this in 3rd grade and up with good results.

Design a Postage Stamp. Free handout download for subs or early finishers!

When were stamps only .22 or .34 cents?  Well, that is when a coworker of mine gave me these handouts.  A simple handwritten lesson for a sub to teach to your class, or for you to use for early finishers, or to supplement a different assignment.  Students look at the examples of some US postage stamps and design their own!  It is written for kindergartners, but anyone could enjoy this little nugget.

Free Lesson Download: Origami substitute art lesson with step by step visuals for flapping bird and crane.

I've only ever tried to teach origami one time - and it was painful.  I know that kids understand origami, and many students love it!  For me, it's really hard.  That didn't stop me from turning it into a sub lesson.

I saw these origami directions on Dover Publications free weekly sample some time ago.  I turned them into a sub lesson.  With this download you get my written sub directions as well as two step-by-step pages on origami folding from Dover.

Free substitute lesson download: The Wind Blend adapted from Ande Cook's Art Starters

Here is a complete lesson for a substitute based on the activity "The Wind Blend" by Ande Cook.  This one asks students to imagine a combination of two things, to make one thing!  I have used this with 2nd grade and up and I always get cool and unique drawings!

Free art sub lesson: The Circle Game! Adapted from Ande Cook's Art Starters

The Circle Game asks students to come up with as many different things as they can from one circle.  I thought this activity was really fun!  However, my elementary students were not that interested.  Most of my kids' papers were dull circles with a scribble on them.  I think older kids might "get it" better.

I have included the handout from Ande Cook's Art Starters as well as my lesson plan with all the directions for a sub.

Free Sub Lesson: A FUN Game Handout and lesson plan!

Here is a sub lesson adapted from a handout in Ande Cook's Art Starters book called "A Fun Game."  Basically, the artist is being asked to draw their interpretations of several different things.  It's fun!  It's a Fun Game!  I wrote out all the directions and everything a sub would need to know to teach this lesson.  I used this for grades 2nd grade and up.
